Day Tours

The New Jersey History Tour  NEW!!
Smithville Mansion, Underground Railroad Museum & Prison Museum
Group Tours & Travel LLC
Our first stop on the history tour is the Smithville Historic District, now listed on the National and New Jersey Registers of Historic Places.  This village grew from a small sawmill operation to a major industrial plant employing hundreds of workers and is famous for its American Star high wheeled bicycle.  The highlight here is an 1840s Greek Revival Mansion built by H.P. Smith, Pioneer of the Industrial Revolution.  The Smithville Mansion will take us back in time to revisit the history that occurred here as well as experiencing the story of Smith’s industrial village.  Our second stop is the Underground Railroad Museum of Burlington County.  Started by Louise Calloway on a site directly behind a station on the Underground Railroad, the museum is now housed in Historic Smithville.  Our tour here offers a visual presentation of the Underground Railroad experience right here in Burlington County, New Jersey where it flourished before the Civil War.  We will leave the museum with a better understanding of why Burlington County merits the honored title of “the Cradle of Emancipation”.   After an included lunch at the historic Robin’s Nest Restaurant in Mt. Holly, we’ll make our third stop at the Burlington County Prison Museum.  Local and national history, architecture, criminal law, sociology, art and the paranormal are only a few things we will find in our tour here.  One more stop before our return home, downtown Burlington’s Historic District.  We’ll spend some time browsing the boutiques and quaint antique shops including the Historic Burlington Antiques Emporium, then make our way home with wonderful memories of an historical day.  $155

Are you a coffee junkie or tea fanatic?  Well this is the tour for you!  The Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park is hosting its Cup of the Valley Coffee & Tea Festival where we can stretch out that first sip of coffee or tea into an all day affair.  There’s an opportunity to taste a variety of imported coffees and teas as well as local concoctions from right here in the Hudson Valley.  Special exhibitions throughout the day such as brewing and roasting techniques, espresso creations and presentations along with special ceremonies including a Japanese Tea and Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony will also be offered.  Curious minds can be enchanted by tasseography, more commonly known as tea leaf readings by Ms. Jade.  There will also be a special appearance by author Sarah Alden Combs, who will be signing books and answering questions about her latest work “Theater Ghost”.  There will be time to browse the festival at your leisure and grab a snack, as we’ll have a later lunch today.  After we’re all hyped up on caffeine, we’ll have tons of energy for walking (or running!)  around the picturesque, idyllic village of Cold Spring.  The Main Street is filled with antique shops, specialty stores, boutiques, art galleries and more coffee shops!  Take your time to wander and browse, relax in the beauty of Dockside Park, and find a place for a late lunch while enjoying the Hudson River atmosphere.  $135

Cherry Blossoms at The Brooklyn Botanical Gardens & the Snug Harbor Cultural Center  NEW!!
Group Tours & Travel LLC
Our day begins with the glorious Brooklyn Botanical Gardens.  Spring is in the air and with it comes a rainbow of colors throughout the 52-acres of gardens and open spaces. Now is a special time of year to stroll these floral delights since the garden’s Cherry Blossoms should be in full bloom. Make sure to explore the more than 200 cherry trees along the Esplanade, the Cherry Walk and Japanese Pond Garden. Other highlights are the bonsai museum and the roses, magnolias, lilacs, wildflowers, orchids, and rhododendrons which should be in or near bloom. After time to stroll through the gardens and browse in the shops, enjoy lunch on your own in the garden’s café. From here we travel to nearby Staten Island to visit one of New York City’s most unexpected and extraordinary destinations, the Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Botanical Garden.  Once a 19th century rest home for sailors, Snug Harbor is now a place where history, architecture, gardens, agriculture, visual and performing arts, and education come together in a dynamic experience. Included in our botanical garden walk is a visit to the magnificent New York Chinese Scholar’s Garden.  Based on Ming Dynasty gardens (1368-1644 AD), this is one of two authentic classical outdoor Chinese gardens in the U.S.  This tour requires a little more walking than other tours but as always, you may walk as much or as little as you like.  $135

Inspiring Art & Architecture  NEW!!
Bartow-Pell Mansion & Noguchi Museum
Group Tours & Travel LLC
Our day begins with a hidden artistic gem tucked away in Astoria, The Isamu Noguchi Sculpture Museum and Gardens.  The museum was established and designed by the artist in his commitment to showing art in public spaces and is a celebration of the life of Noguchi and the extraordinary works he left behind.   Besides the amazing and serene outdoor sculpture garden, you will be astonished by over 200 works of art that are housed in a renovated 1920s industrial building with 27,000 square feet of gallery space on two floors.  The space also features a Museum Shop and Cafe which carry Noguchi's lighting and furniture designs along with books and gifts.  A few steps away is another little gem created in the spirit of Isamu Noguchi, the Socrates Sculpture Park, a community engaged art space that provides an open platform for public art and encourages unfettered ambition in scale and subject matter.  As we stroll through the grounds you may notice that a majority of artworks are in the process of being created, allowing visitors the unique opportunity to witness the labor-intensive art making process firsthand.  A memorable lunch is next in a venue that was built by the Bohemian Citizens Benevolent Society of Astoria.  The Bohemian Hall and Beer Garden carries on their tradition today and serves several Czech specialties along with Beer Garden favorites.  We’ll have the special pleasure of then touring the last remaining 19th century estate in Pelham Bay Park, the Bartow-Pell Mansion.  Our tour will bring history to life as we walk through the mansion as among the grounds.  $170
